Manga

In contemporary Moscow, strange things are in the air: a reckless youth can turn invisible at will; a beautiful model seemingly materializes in the street beneath her likeness illuminated on a billboard, and all of this may be generated by a video game in the possession of a pseudo intellectual into whose car the model pours herself before collapsing, thus bringing together the fates of all three. The plot seems kind of unconnected, as it should be: the Japanese titles tell us that man-ga means picture at random. The one of few independent Russian films, Manga looks at today’s urban world of Moscow on its way to becoming a global capital, and investigates the psychological, emotional and physical tensions resulting from that process.

Nos Amis les Terriens

In order to observe the human subjects in the wild and under controlled situations, the aliens pluck two strangers, a man and a woman, from a forest and drop them -- naked -- into a clear cage suspended in darkness. Exhibit A is painter Agathe, whose volcanic temper is offset by the confused brooding of Exhibit B, musician Bertrand. As the narrator speculates on the uses of everyday objects, including toilets, chickens and felt-tipped pens, one of each item is obligingly dropped into the cell to see what the humans will do with it. Meanwhile, Exhibit A and B’s respective spouses, Donatien and Ursuline, meet and soon begin an uneasy cohabitation observed in all its messy confusion by the unseen alien lensers.

Solyaris (Solaris)

Chris Kelvin is sent to investigate the mysterious happenings on a space station orbiting the water planet Solaris. As Kelvin attempts to understand what has happened, his wife Hari appears to him, but she is dead, having committed suicide. Her mind is blank as to how she came to be there and he realizes it is not her but one of the manifestations drawn out of people’s memories that everybody on the station is haunted by.

Ainoa

Year 2078: the robot girl Ainoa is programmed to control the “great atomic war” in the past. Dr. Kerensky, who constructed her, understands his mistake and, in 2014, withdraws to an underground shelter with a group of friends. In 2071, they leave to find Ainoa and re-program her to stop the war in the past. They kidnap her, but only Yuri, survives a government scheme to retrieve her. Not able to cope, she calls for back up and is instead, disposed off.

Twentysomethings Dave and Andrew are roommates and they’re having a difficult period. Dave gets fired from his company and Andrew is falsely accused for sexually. To cap it off, the city condemns their house and plans to demolish it. When the cops surround their ramshackle abode and lob tear gas inside, Dave and Andrew just wish that the world would go away. And that’s exactly what happens. Suddenly, our anti-heroes are transported into a white vacuum where nothing exists apart from their house and themselves.
